The Quilted Landscape
We are delighted to have Gloria Loughman join us from Victoria, Australia, for our October guild meeting! Gloria will present her lecture and slide show, ‘The Quilted Landscape’. Have you thought about making a quilt to capture your memories of a special place? Perhaps a wonderful holiday destination, a view from your lounge room window or a memory of a special place from childhood. No matter what the inspiration, creating a landscape quilt is an achievable project. The process combines making decisions about design and color choices as well as incorporating accurate construction techniques. In her presentation, Gloria will focus on these components, solving the
mystery of where to begin.
Gloria’s initiation into the world of patchwork occurred nearly 30 years ago when she was recovering from a course of chemotherapy for breast cancer. After completing some studies in design and colour as part of a Diploma of Art in 1996, she began to make large vivid landscape quilts depicting the Australian bush.
Having the opportunity to travel to many unique and fascinating parts of the continent, she is continually challenged to reproduce these images in fabric. In more recent times, her landscapes have become more abstract as she played with pattern and colour. Her series of quilts based on buildings and other facades is a result of a love of architecture and her opportunity to travel and explore, photographing many fascinating buildings. Underlying all of her work is a passion for colour and the ongoing challenge to capture light in her work. Most of the textiles used have been hand dyed or painted and feature extensive machine embroidery.
Gloria has had a number of solo exhibitions, and many of her quilts have won many major awards in Australia, Europe, Japan and the United States. Gloria is also the author of four books, Luminous Landscapes, Quilted Symphony, Radiant Landscapes and Fabulous Facades.
What began as a therapy has developed into a passion and has given Gloria the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting her quilts, teaching classes and meeting lots of wonderful people!
Gloria is married to her husband Tony, a very keen and talented photographer, so Gloria is never short of inspiration for her work. Gloria has three daughters and nine grandchildren.

Our 2023-2024 guild year:
Here’s a sneak peek at what members can expect on the Virtual Cruise in January.
Gatherings are In-Person on the First Wednesday of the Month
Gatherings - November 1, 2023
We kick started the new season of Gatherings with the first of 3 sewing bees. These bees will not only give members an opportunity to contribute to the charitable work of the guild, they will also provide a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces and some new ones too. Members are welcome to drop in for a short time or stay for the day.
Gatherings started as a new programme last year. This monthly in-person programme was created to enable members to meet, sew, socialize and learn. From September to June, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, on the first Wednesday of the month, there will be space for members who wish to sew. There will be an opportunity to pick up and deliver supplies and projects to SMILE and PAL and other outreach projects. The library will be open to take out and return library books. If there is interest there will be an opportunity for members to participate in the UFO Challenge and Strippers Club.
* Please note that the library will be open from 10:30 am until 2:00 pm.
Coordinators: Elaine LaRonde & Jean McFarlane.
