The Art of Appliqué

Kathy Wylie

Kathy is a multiple international-award winning quilter specializing in applique, quilt design, domestic machine quilting and English Paper Piecing techniques.  She started sewing and embroidering as a young girl, laying the foundation for the life-altering discovery of quilting two decades later.  Over the past twenty-five years, quilting has grown from a hobby into a full-time creative career.

Kathy’s quilt designs have received recognition in Canada as well as internationally.  Her quilt Instruments of Praise earned the 2011 Bernina Machine Workmanship Award from the American Quilter’s Society and now resides in the U.S. National Quilt Museum as part of its permanent collection.   Her most recent quilt For Such a Time as This has received multiple awards, including the AQS Best of Show at the 2018 Fall Paducah QuiltWeek and the CQA/ACC Best of Show at Quilt Canada 2019.

Kathy's lecture is The Art of Appliqué and it is all about appliqué!  Do you marvel over beautiful appliquéd quilts and wonder how they were accomplished? You might be surprised at the number of techniques and methods that can be used to create these masterpieces. This lecture will give you some insight into the various types of appliqué along with stunning photographs.  You are not going to want to miss this lecture.

Abstract-A-Licious - Exercises in Abstract Design

If you’ve looked with secret longing to the world of art quilts but don’t know where to start, this is the class for you. Lyric will gently guide you through concrete exercises designed to help you create ideas for original abstract quilts.

Doodles will be scribbled, eyes and minds will be opened, and fun will be had. You will learn the basics of fused collage as you assemble your quilt top. Even students who have never created their own designs before will end the day with at least one small and uniquely original art quilt top.

For more information about this exciting workshop visit Lyric’s website:

This workshop will open to non-members on September 26.

This is a full day, 6-hour workshop that is being presented in two 3-hour sessions  on October 13 and 19.  In between those two dates you will have time to work on your project AND starting on Oct 13th – one week access to all video tutorials online.

The fee is $70. To sign up first go to the WCQG Online Store to pay the fee and then fill out the Workshop Registration Form and send it to  Use the same email if you have any questions.
