A is for Appliqué
Barbara J. Eikmeier
The Program Committee is excited to have Barb Eikmeier join us for our November Meeting to present her trunk show, A is for Appliqué. Styles include Broderie Perse, Hawaiian appliqué and traditional designs. Barb will show over 40 examples of hand and machine work and share with us why she gave up all other appliqué techniques for back-basting appliqué, the topic of her book, Back-Basting Appliqué, Step by Step.
Barb has been quilting since 1984 and teaching quilting since 1990. Barb is the mother of two, grandmother of one, and author of four quilting books. She is also a fabric designer for Paintbrush Studio Fabrics, a pattern designer, a Craftsy instructor, and she is pleased to now offer her regular lectures and workshops virtually.
Barb lives in Lansing, Kansas with her husband and two dogs where in addition to quilting she enjoys flower gardening, baking pies, writing, and sailing.
Barb shares her quilting adventures on social media, including Instagram at @bjeikmeier and on her website www.barbsfavorites.com

Gatherings are In-Person on the First Wednesday of the Month
Welcome to our next Gatherings
December 7, 2022 10:30 am - 3:30 pm
Gatherings is a new programme offered by the WCQG. This new monthly in-person programme was created to enable members to meet, sew, socialize and learn. From October to June, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, on the first Wednesday of the month, there will be space for members who wish to sew. There will be an opportunity to pick up and deliver supplies and projects to SMILE and PAL and other outreach projects. The library will be open to take out and return library books. There will be an opportunity to participate in the UFO Challenge and Strippers Club.
In addition, there will be a Featured Member sharing works and/or techniques, enabling members to enhance their quilting talents.
There are more than 10 different ways to make HSTs which appear in numerous quilt blocks.
I would like to share a few techniques that avoid bias edges, but give you a variety of speedier and accurate methods of sewing this versatile square. The demonstration will start at 11:00 am.
For those of you wishing to sew along with me:
Bring roughly 2 fat quarters (FQ) in contrasting material, sewing machine, pencil, paper, ruler, scissors, if you would like to learn these techniques together.
You will need to register with Jean McFarlane to reserve a table for the day. Email Jean at firstname.lastname@example.org
For those of you wishing to observe:
Bring a notebook and pen or pencil
Bonnie Murdoch, Featured Member for December Gatherings
For anyone just wishing to come and sew for the day, please contact Jean to reserve a table.
And, how about some Christmas treats?? Please feel free to bring some sweets or savouries to enjoy during Gatherings. We'll have tea and coffee for you to enjoy with your treat.
Gatherings is a new initiative for WCQG members, so any and all feedback and suggestions are welcome.
Coordinators: Elaine LaRonde & Jean McFarlane.
This month Bonnie Murdoch will be featured along with a display of some of her quilts.
For the safety of the membership, Gatherings will adhere to health and safety guidelines established by the Region of Waterloo and the WCQG Executive.
At this time proof of vaccination and masking are required to enter the room for any purpose. We will continue to monitor Covid health guidelines and numbers, but given the age demographic of our membership we are taking these current extra precautions.
A big THANKS to the volunteers at November Gathering and to the 27 members who borrowed a total of 80 library books. Borrowers must be current members and may borrow three (3) books using a valid library card. The cards will be available at the membership table where you check in at the Gatherings.
On December 7, borrowing will continue in two ways:
In-house at the monthly Gatherings, the library will be open between 10:30am - 3:30pm.
Online orders with curbside pickup will continue. The Deadline for online orders, by email to Librarians, is Saturday, December 3. Curbside pick-up, on Dec 7, will be 12 noon to 2 pm outside in the Albert McCormick Community Centre parking lot.
BRING ONE, TAKE TWO For the next Gathering take a look through your magazine stash and bring them to donate to the BRING ONE, TAKE TWO table.
Bring your Toonies for the BOOK SALE! Up on the library stage, we will set out the books 2000-2002 that were culled from the collection. We'll continue to sell these culled books on a month-to-month basis.
