Quilting Journey of a Renaissance Woman

Sue Sherman

We are delighted to have fibre artist Sue Sherman for our February guild meeting!  Sue will present her lecture and slide show, Quilting Journey of a Renaissance Woman.  Sue will cover her quilting journey starting with traditional pieced quilts and will include her time living in Hawaii where she learned traditional Hawaiian quilting.  The bulk of the presentation will cover her more recent realistic animal quilts which she creates by painting with thickened dyes onto white cotton, and extensive machine thread painting/quilting.

Sue’s work is inspired by her own photographs of animals from around the world. She has travelled to all seven continents, both through her earlier work as an engineer and more recently on trips with a specific aim to observe animals in their natural habitat.

Sue’s work has won awards at national and international events including the $5000 Superior Threads Award for Thread Artistry in the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival.  She has been a Juried Artist Member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates since 2019 and her work has been featured in industry magazines in Canada and the US.

Heart Pillows for the St Mary's Hospital Cardiac Unit.

Join us at Gatherings to sew and /or stuff heart pillows for the Cardiac Unit at St. Mary's Hospital. We have committed to providing 80 heart pillows each month (including the summer months). Kits and fibre fill stuffing will be available. Bring your sewing machine, or bring a hand sewing needle and thread to help sew stuffed pillows closed. Directions for the pillows can be found on the website under Charity Projects. You can also use your own fabrics (or orphan blocks) to make these 13 x 14 inch pillows.

Gatherings is held in the Community Room at Albert McCormick Community Center. Doors open at 10:30  for members. There will be representatives from Membership, Library, Heart Pillows, SMILE, PAL, Memory, Quilts of Valour, UFOs and Fabric Curator.

We would ask that members come for a 10:30 start to the day. This will give those Outreach Members, Library and Membership time to set up their areas from 10:00 to 10:30 for your enjoyment.
