Scraps Versus Scrappy
Cheryl Arkison

We are delighted to have Cheryl Arkison join us from Calgary, Alberta, for our March meeting. Cheryl will present her lecture and trunk show, ‘Scraps Versus Scrappy’ where Cheryl will show us all the pleasures and joys of using your scraps. She will discuss the difference between a scrap quilt and a scrappy one, illustrated with her own scrap bins and a collection of both scrap and scrappy quilts.  That’s right, they are not the same! Cheryl will also discuss colour, value, and a little bit of quilt history. Bad jokes always included!

Cheryl has been quilting for over twenty years and is well known for her use of bold colour and the quiet whispers of low volume fabrics but she will use anything in between as well. She says you should use what you love, make what makes you happy. Life is too short not to play with fabric. To play, period. Part instigator, part coach, she loves to get you exploring technique, ideas, colour and more as you dive into your stash. No piece is too small or too loud, fabric is meant to be used. Quilting, as is life, is about the process - the journey - not the product. Cheryl says we should enjoy all of it knowing that each time we get our butt in the seat and sew, we are giving a gift to ourself. She is a huge proponent of play and through The Quilters’ Playcation, leads us all on adventures!

Gatherings are In-Person on the First Wednesday of the Month

Welcome to our next Gatherings
April 5, 2023 10:30 am - 3:30 pm

Gatherings is a new programme offered by the WCQG. This new monthly in-person programme was created to enable members to meet, sew, socialize and learn. From October to June, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, on the first Wednesday of the month, there will be space for members who wish to sew. There will be an opportunity to pick up and deliver supplies and projects to SMILE and PAL and other outreach projects. The library will be open to take out and return library books. There will be an opportunity to participate in the UFO Challenge and Strippers Club.

* Please note that the library will be open from 10:30 am until 2:00 pm.

In addition, there will be a Featured Member sharing works and/or techniques, enabling members to enhance their quilting talents. For the schedule of Featured Members click here.

In my presentation for the 2022 International Quilting Day, I said that celebrating life’s milestones for a quilter can only be done in one way – with a quilt. I plan to have the Golden Threads quilt on display along with its album and also about twenty or so additional quilts I have made or received over the years. Included will be some of my maple leaf series and coffee table quilts. I'll be prepared to answer questions about them and any of my other quilts. I would be particularly delighted to have you bring a quilt or two to discuss with me - perhaps do some trouble-shooting.

Gatherings is a new initiative for WCQG members, so any and all feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Coordinators: Elaine LaRonde & Jean McFarlane.

This month Kathy Bissett will be featured showing a selection of her quilts including Golden Threads, made for her parents' 50th anniversary.

Please Note:

For the safety of the membership, Gatherings will adhere to health and safety guidelines established by the Region of Waterloo and the WCQG Executive.

At this time proof of vaccination and masking are required to enter the room for any purpose.  We will continue to monitor Covid health guidelines and numbers, but given the age demographic of our membership we are taking these current extra precautions.

We hope to see you at Gatherings on Wednesday, April 5th to pick up your online book orders and return the books borrowed in March. The Library will be open from 10:30am  until 2:00 pm and you may borrow 3 books in total.

At the guild's Book Sale Table there is no limit on how many books you can buy for $2.00 each. The guild's free magazine exchange Bring One-Take Two  continues.

Deadline for April online orders is Tues. April 4th and Curbside pickup is on Wednesday, April 5th between 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Enjoy the Quiz. The prize is a fat quarter for a completed Quiz when borrowing library books.
